GOING GREEN and GIVING UP ALL THOSE CHEMICALS

the great living site - is for natural product for the home - for the kids - for the family - for gifts .. for anything and everything in your life ..

Five advantages of going Certified Organic:

1. Beneficial to the Soil - Organic systems use a modern yet scientific knowledge of ecology and soil science, while using traditional techniques of crop rotations to provide fertility, weed as well as pest control.

2. Beneficial to the Environment - Organic systems try to lessen usage of non-renewable resources. Organic production tries all the while to provide sustenance and supports the optimum handling of the environment and wildlife as a precedence.

3. Beneficial to People - Organic products have been proven to possess more vitamins, nutrients and cancer-combating antioxidants as compared to non-organic products.

4. Absence of artificial Chemicals - Organic products ban using the synthetic chemicals, pesticides and fertilizers.
5. Absence of GMOs - Certified Organic products do not GMOs (genetically modified organisms), as they are banned as per standards laid down for organic food and farming. You can buy something that claims organic or natural but if there is no certified organic label they can use genetically modified components.

How does a small company get involved in going green?

I am the marketing manager in a small multimedia company (under 20 people). We are looking to get involved environmentally, going GREEN. How can we get involved in a local community with little budget? Also, we are self-serving in the fact that we would like to get some recognition out of this.

Eco-tourism in Mexico, not Easy

Everything in life seems to be a trade-off. When trying to design a little ecologically smart beach hotel in Tulum, it gets challenging fast. Firstly there is no electricity provided along the Tulum beach. So we needed to generate and store enough power to supply our cabanas and guests, as well as the restaurant and bar.

We wanted our guests to have 24 hr electricity so they could have fans and lights and their laptops whenever they wanted. And of course we wanted refrigeration in the restaurant and bar to keep everything fresh and healthy. So we invested heaps of money in a 6kw wind turbine, with back up generator and a huge bank of batteries to store all the power we make.

Secondly we have no sewerage services along the beach. We were not prepared to just drill holes into the ground and dispose of our waste in the way that the big all-inclusive hotels do (gross!). So we invested in 2 US made bio-treatment systems that produce 99% clean water that can be used on the gardens (and yes, we tested the water to see if the claims of 99% were true…yes!). But we didn’t count on the systems needing 8 amps of power…so back to the electrical system which now needed an upgrade.

Thirdly, there is no water supply along the beach. We had to find low salt content water from a well, and then build a cistern to hold it and mix with fresh water that gets trucked in every day…what a pain.

Then we invested in putting in solar hot water heating on the roof of each cabana, but found that the water corroded all the tubing really fast. And of course the installation wasn’t done properly…so back to the drawing board on cabana solar hot water. Attempt 2 is scheduled for the fall this year. We will keep you posted.

We have just built some new gardens over in the jungle and will be growing our own organic vegetables, herbs and fruits, which is leading us into composting all the kitchen waste. And they say that recycling is just around the corner…so with a little luck we will just get more and more eco-real as time goes by. So in a nutshell it is really difficult to design a little ecologically smart beach Tulum Hotel.

I know someone that is afraid of renewing her green card because it expired in 2002. For reasons she wouldn’t say, she is now worried she will get deported when going to renew it.

Geothermal Heat Pump – a green and cost effective technology

Posted: February 2009 in Electronics

The word geothermal originates from two Greek words “geo” which mean earth and “therme” which heat. Therefore it is a renewable source of energy emanating from the ground. A Geothermal heat pump works on the principal that in winters, it moves the heat from the earth into the home whilst in summers the apparatus discharges the heat of your home into the ground. Heat flows from higher temperatures substances to lower temperature substances and the earth traps as much as half the energy of the sun received by it. A ground source heat pump utilizes this energy stored in the earth or water bodies to provide heating. Ground source heat pumps use the earth as a source of energy in winters and as a heat sink in summers. A geothermal heat pump transfers the heat from the water to the air and thus it functions as an air conditioner.

As it relies on renewable source of energy a geothermal heat pump or ground source heat pump is much for efficient in heating and cooling the spaces and water than an electric heater is. This enables you to cut utilities bills by as much as 70%.

Using the relatively constant temperature of the ground several feet below the earth’s surface for heating and cooling, geothermal heat pumps are appropriate both for retrofit and new houses. A large number of geothermal companies and geothermal pump contractors are there and you can easily get a geothermal heap pump installed in your home.

The basic components of a ground source heat pump include a loop field, a liquid pump pack and a water source heat pump. The loop field can be placed on your home, enabling it to discharge heat into the ground or move the earth’s heat into your home. The size of the loop depends upon the size of the building. The liquid pump pack is used to send the water whilst the water source heat pump is more like a boiler.

How many of your “Earth Day” resolutions are you still keeping?

Who here is still doing everything they hoped to on Earth Day? What is the hardest thing for you, recycling, driving less, not using a/c, less water, organic gardening?

We are still doing what we planned on. I drive very little now, and really don’t miss it. Our garden isn’t as productive as we would like, but we were short on rain for a month or so. We are still electricity junkies, for TV, computers and fans, but have really gotten into “freecycling”. How are you doing?
