What is the Eco Atkins Diet?|Questions and Answers

Posted: March 2010 in Health
04

The newest of the trendy diets is the Eco-Atkins Diet. The basis for this diet is that your primary source of protein is based around plant sources. This diets appeals to vegetarians and those of us who are concerned about the environment and prevention of cruelty to animals. This article answers some questions you may have concerning what the Eco-Atkins diet is and how you can implement it.

Q. What is the Eco-Atkins diet?

A. It is a diet that involves consuming more plant based instead of animal based protein?

Q. What are sources of plant based protein?

A. Vegetables, fruits, beans, nuts, seeds, and whole grains.

Q. How do plant proteins help fight fat?

A. “Consuming a variety of plant-based foods like veggies, grains, soy and nuts provides all the essential amino acids the body needs for optimal health,”  says nutritionist Janet Bond Brill, Ph.D., R.D. author of Cholesterol Down (Three Rivers Press, 2006)

Q. Do plant based proteins flatten the belly?

A. When intake of omega-3 fatty acids and monounsaturated fatty acids (which are present in all plant foods) is increased, the adiponectin hormone production is increased. This hormone tells the body to burn more fat and helps to prevent the conversion of sugar to fat.

Q. Will eating plant foods cause me to feel full?

A. Yes, plant based foods contain lots of fiber. The fiber expands in the stomach in helps you to feel full faster.

Q. I’m not a vegetarian; can I still eat meat on the Eco Atkins diet?

A. The idea of this diet is to limit animal based protein like beef, pork, chicken and fish. You can still eat these foods in small amounts.

Q. I have a family history of heart disease or diabetes, will this diet help me?

A. Plant-protein dieters benefit from improved heart health and decreased risk of diabetes. After only 4 weeks study subjects saw a 15-point drop in LDL (”Bad”) cholesterol and a 14-point drop in blood pressure, according to a study in the annals of Internal Medicine.

Q. Is this diet expensive?

A. Meat is generally one of the most expensive items on the food bill. By replacing meats with beans and mushrooms you can save up to four times the money.

Q. Will I have enough energy on this diet to perform my daily tasks?

A. You will get most of your key nutritional requirements from eating plant-based foods. However, the diet is lacking vitamin B-12 which is essential for optimal energy. You will need to take a multi-vitamin if you’re not already.

Q. I like to bake; can I substitute any of the high fat animal ingredients for a healthy plant-based ingredient?

A. Yes you can. Try this: puree 15 oz of black beans and substitute it for the eggs, oil, milk, water, or butter.

Q. Are there any programs that can help make this diet easy to implement?

A. Strip That Fat is the premier weight loss program. You can tell the program that you only want to eat foods from plant sources and it will generate meal plans and shopping lists for you. You will not have to wonder which meals to prepare or eat the same meals over and over. Strip That Fat can make the Eco Atkins diet easy to implement.

Are there any effective, eco-friendly ways to whiten laundry?

Posted: March 2010 in Cleaning & Laundry
02

I do my laundry at fairly low temperatures (30 - 40 degrees C) using eco-friendly washing liquid, to try to minimise the environmental impact. While this works fine for coloureds and darks, my white clothes/bedding could do with a bit of help. Is there anything natural I could add while washing to whiten them? (Lemon juice? Vinegar? Bicarb soda? Something else entirely?)

N.B. I do dry whites in direct sunlight as much as possible, but this doesn’t seem to be enough!

Green Tea - Health Benefits

Studies convey that India and China were using the boiled tea leaves for more than five thousand years. They were among the first countries for the consumption of teas.

In the tradition of Japan also tea is very fundamental. Tea comes in the cultural aspect of the countries in Asia.

Tea is usually provided from Camellia Sinensis – a tea plant cultivated mostly in Middle East Asia and Africa.

The three main categories of tea are black tea, green tea and oolong tea. Though all these categories are derived from the same plant, the method of processing makes them different to each other. Green tea is the category which does not go through the process of fermentation. Oolong tea is gone through partial fermentation where as black tea is completely fermented. Asian nations like China, India, Japan, Thailand etc mostly use green tea and oolong tea. In the US, black tea is commonly used.

Green tea has become much popular these days as it has got numerous good aspects on the health. Several researches held to know about this aspect, reveals that consuming green tea can prevent or reduce several diseases.

Green tea is useful for reducing the risk of cancer, reducing the bad cholesterol in the body, inflammatory diseases, flatulence, regulating the bowel activities, balancing the sugar level in the blood, increasing thermo genesis, etc.

Generally in France, the diet of the people is very rich in the fat consumption aspects. Studies show that they have less heart problems still due to the regular intake of green tea. Japanese people are heavy smokers, but they too have less heart problems due to the use of green tea.

Green tea contains some poly phenols which work as antioxidants. These antioxidants always act against certain free radicals formed inside the body. The free radicals are formed naturally and can increase due to the pollution, smoking, UV rays etc. Black tea contains only 10% polyphenols where as green tea has 30 to 40% polyphenols.

Usually an adult is preferred to have three or four cups of green tea a day.

The advantages of green tea on our health aspects:

1.      The regular consumers of green tea have less amount of bad cholesterol in the body and have more good cholesterol too. Some researches held in some animals say that poly phenols can reduce the intestine’s absorption of cholesterol and also boosts the emission of cholesterol from the body.

2.      Green teas effect to reduce the risk of cancer on Japanese people has not proved scientifically. But some researches reveal that the poly phenols can definitely reduce the cancer cells.

3.      Some researches reveal that polyphenols also reduce Type-1 diabetes. It helps to decrease the production of insulin for this and helps to make a balance to the glucose level in the blood.

4.      Green tea is good for liver too. It can decrease the risk of diseases caused by alcohol consumption and also the problems due to that. The people who use green tea regularly can prevent the liver problems or diseases.

5.      The polyphenols in the green tea can help us to reduce the weight of the body, though it is not proved scientifically. So it is also used in several weight loss products.

For a few people, some safety measures should be considered for the consumption of green tea. Those who have serious health problems should not use green tea. This includes ulcer, heart diseases, mental disorders etc. Ladies who are pregnant are not recommended the consumption of green tea. Those who are having regular medications like antibiotics, weight losing supplements, beta blockers, oral contraceptives, lithium, etc should never consume green tea with this as it can reduce or nullify the effect of these medicines. Sometimes green tea can also have some side effects when used along with these medications.

Posted: February 2010 in Other - Environment

A lot of the skills that used to be used are very eco friendly. Do you have any of these eco friendly skills? Do you still use them?

I am thinking about the old skills which used things they had to hand, because they grew locally or used recycled materials such as:
bottling, jam making and preserving
willow items, baskets, lampshades
coppicing, drystone walling
curing meats and skins
making home prepartions for toiletries, medicines
making carts, buggies, trailers,
making own gardening implements/tools
bee keeping, making beeswax products
rag rug making, darning - who can darn now?

Any other old fashioned eco friendly skills you have?
